Methods One hundred female IC patients were screened. Conclusions IC begins primarily with frequency and is intermittent in most patients with symptom flares associated with sexual activity. Keywords: Interstitial cystitis IC , pelvic pain, interstitial cystitis genetics, dyspareunia, interstitial cystitis misdiagnoses. Current symptoms The patients were asked what their current symptoms are including frequency, urgency, bladder or pelvic pain, and urinary incontinence.

Diagnoses prior to IC diagnosis The patients were asked what their initial diagnoses were and if they received any associated gynecologic diagnoses. Gynecologic symptoms They reported the effect of sexual activity on their pain and whether or not they had post intercourse flares of their bladder symptoms.

First degree relatives with bladder symptoms Patients were asked if any male or female relatives had bladder symptoms similar to their own symptoms. Results A total of females with IC were evaluated. Even if you diligently follow all steps to keep your interstitial cystitis IC symptoms under control, there may be times when you experience an IC flare.

Learn to recognize what triggers your IC flares. Some common IC triggers include diet , medicines including certain vitamins and supplements , exercise , sexual intercourse , hormone fluctuations, stress, certain modes of transportation or long trips , and even tight clothing.

IC flares are not the same for everyone. Definitions included:. The bacteria is then tested to determine which drugs will most effectively treat the bacteria.

Cystoscopy with hydrodistention. This is the main diagnostic tool for interstitial cystitis. Since this procedure can be painful for someone with interstitial cystitis, it is usually performed while the patient is under general anesthesia. The causes of interstitial cystitis are still unknown.

Researchers are currently looking into many theories of what causes IC. The results of that research could lead to potential treatments. IC is not caused by stress, though stress reduction can be helpful and possibly reduce symptoms.

IC is also not a psychosomatic disorder.
