Monique said two men had come up behind them, shot them and fled. Emergency vehicles searched the park for Monique and Paul with only her screams to help locate them. Monique was shot in the shoulder, and Paul was shot in the back of the head. Later that morning at the hospital, the doctors took Paul off life support while Monique and his children were by his side holding his hands.

Meanwhile, detectives investigated the crime scene. An initial search revealed only. The weather was also terrible that night, so police questioned why the couple would go to park at all. Monique gave her account of the evening, saying they went out to the movies, went to dinner and then went to the park for a romantic picnic. When asked who might have known they were going to be at the park, Monique said Andrew and Latwon knew they were there.

As the interview continued, however, Monique revealed she had been romantically involved with Andrew. Andrew, 18, was also much closer in age to the year-old Monique than year-old Paul. They apparently tried to keep the affair a secret, but eventually Monique had confessed to Rebecca. She swore her to secrecy and had Andrew move out before Paul returned. A heavily sedated Monique continued to confess her affair, and by the end of her interview, she ended up revealing a lot more than she anticipated.

I think the three of them discussed shooting her and I think they also discussed beating her. She knew that she was going to meet with some physical violence. But when Monique went to dinner with Paul, she started having second thoughts. In her statement, Monique said she professed her love for Paul and decided to call it off.

Paul Berkley suspected the affair and planned to divorce his wife, they said. That is when, Raleigh police said, she put in motion a plot to kill her husband. The couple went to see the movie "King Kong" before going to Millbrook Exchange Park for "a romantic interlude. Spurlin said that during the movie, Monique Berkley went to the restroom and called Canty, telling him to meet them at the park. Spurlin said Johnson drove Canty.

Canty later walked past the couple at the park and shot Paul Berkley in the back of the head and Monique Berkley in the shoulder, Spurlin said. Canty also took Berkley's wallet to make it look like a robbery. Authorities have never recovered the murder weapon and believe it was thrown in a river.

Investigators said a gun sold to Canty was test-fired in a Johnston County yard before the killing, and shell casings from that matched the casings found at the crime scene. Canty pleaded guilty Aug. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Johnson's trial date has not been set. Investigators knew that a shot to the head killed Paul Berkley in the early-morning hours of Dec.

The recently released autopsy report, however, indicates that Berkley, 46, was also stabbed in the head. Medical examiners found a 1-inch deep stab wound near his right ear and temporal scalp that caused injuries to the brain and skull. Investigators said his wife, Monique Berkley, 26, confessed to the slaying and that she had help from her boyfriend, Andrew Canty, and his friend, Latwon Johnson, both Police said Paul Berkley suspected that his wife was having an affair, and that he told his daughter that he planned to divorce his wife.

That is when, Raleigh police said, Monique Berkley allegedly put a plot to kill her husband in motion. The plan, authorities said, called for Monique Berkley to be beaten to cover up her involvement in the alleged crime.

She, however, was shot. Investigators have not said why she was shot instead. All three suspects were indicted soon after the shooting on first-degree murder charges.

If convicted, they could face the death penalty. Police said Monique Berkley, 26, of Clayton, admitted to plotting to kill her husband, Paul Berkley, 46, to get collect on his life insurance. Instead, he was shot and stabbed in the head by Canty and Johnson. But then again, maybe he would have. One other thing I remember about Paul is he did talk about his kids often.
